A brand new day!

Oh spring, you toy with my emotions! Everyday surely feels new, that smell of earth, the colors your eyes probably forgot existed, the birds singing a sweeter tune. And then winter bites back once and again but slowly slipping away for the year. I've been working on catching up from winter, clay freezing and thawing, colds and flu's, and mobilizing my work station to the warmer basement and back to the workshop. I have some great ideas coming up, I'm going to do a transvestite series, I've got some great tile ideas and am thinking about some jewelry. Here's to a new season, new creations and a brand new day!

Fly!

Wow... busy month! Just got done with a marathon of glazing and wire work for my last load. Almost all of my work has gone out to my 3 new favorite places, Homespun: Modern Handmade in Indianapolis, Eclectics in Kansas City and Poppy in Columbia, MO. It's been a tedious since I do so many sculptural pieces with clay and wire but I am so inspired by my empty shelves in the garage. Completed pieces are ready to go home with somebody who will love them as much as I do and new ones are brewing in my head. Quirky? Whimsical? Humorous? You betcha! There's bumps along the way, of course, but I feel like I am finally getting to fly!

Kiln unloaded

It's been such a journey to get to this place where I finally have a kiln load ready to sell. Glazing is my least favorite part of the whole process but I always take my time and do a good job. I worked really hard last Thursday and Friday to make the push for this load to be ready to fire. Then half the pieces had glaze crawling in a few spots. Maybe it was the humidity or I didn't get a high enough temp, not sure but reglazed and fired again Saturday with a 15 minute hold at 1850 degrees. It worked great, whew! So, tomorrow I will be taking pics and hopefully you will like what you see.

Feels like home

New house, new issues, including but not limited to, the need to update the electrical and make a home for the kiln. Got a great little setup for my studio and this awesome retro blue vinyl chair that makes this place feel like home. I get to work on my art during Wren naps and watch this brave little chipmunk slowly get more and more comfortable with the idea of coming in the garage. I hope you like the new work I have posted on the main page, its just a few of the pieces I have going right now. They should all be ready to go within a couple weeks. Is summer already half way through? Where does time go?

The Dirty Begins

When this idea began, I never thought it would take this long to buy clay. I've learned so much about starting a business and most importantly, I have learned that I have so much to learn. Getting a space to unload all my clay stuff was a big deal, getting a work table was really great, getting official was incredible and now getting clay, well, I just can't wait to get dirty. Happy Spring!

The swirling paintbrush

Happy New Year! Thank you to everyone for such a wonderful holiday. Thanks to Seth and Jessi for giving me an opportunity to paint for them again. My paintbrush continues to swirl. Adam is tired of hearing about my ceramics, even as I paint I mumble of sculpture. I am so excited about a book I got for Christmas that is called "A is for Apron". It has some of the cutest apron ideas. I love the idea of having some in my shop for sale soon, that counts as sculpture, don't you think? Until then, cats!

The conspiracy of clay

The art forms/mediums I've been up to have not been so much on the ceramics side. Straightening the house so that some one may fall in love with it and buy, swirling squash and apples with rice cereal so that Wren may make an interesting design on her high chair while I attempt to feed her and working on my commissioned paintings of the cats. I wake up sometimes thinking I'm just going to unpack that wheel out in the garage and buy a box of clay and sit out there and throw and then I remember all the above things that I should do. I went to this lecture recently about making a living as an artist and one of the things that stuck out in my mind was that, "everyone and everything is conspiring against you and your time to make art". Funny but kinda true. I have finished the second of the 5 kitty paintings and have one more after that, a nice play on "American Gothic" someone has asked for that should be fun. It won't be long, stay with me and check back often. You might be looking for me and find Wren and I one day very soon throwing at the wheel, hands dried with clay and loving every minute.

Starving artist

I have begun my next chapter in life. Having always loved art and always wondering if this would ever be possible to be AN ARTIST... I hope I don't become like those commercials on t.v. that say "sofa-sized paintings for only $19 on liquidation sale now at the downtown best western!" Four years of being an art teacher and saying "yeah, get out there and sell that!" isn't forgotten. I'm going to get out there and sell it too. It might be a little dirty but the end result will be so sweet! Remembering what you loved as a kid, for me it's always been art or gardening, and getting paid for it, that's where I'm headed.
